I disagree with the statement. I have two reasons to support my opinion. First, the illegalization of smoking would severely damage Japan’s economy. The government puts a high tax on tobaccos and gains a lot of profits from the tax. If smoking became illegal in Japan, the government would lose a huge source of its revenue. Second, putting a ban on smoking would prove Japan as a failing democracy. If smoking were to be made illegal in Japan, there would be a lot of resistance to this irrational change from smokers. It is true that some people abominate smoking because they fear the numerous negative effects that smoke has on human health. In order to secure their right to hate smoking, many designated spaces for smoking have been set around the country. Likewise, I believe that smokers have their right to smoke, too. Thus, the government should not infringe their right to smoke. For the above-mentioned reasons, I disagree with the statement that smoking should be made illegal in Japan. こんなかんじ。
